OIC lists Israeli companies in occupied territories

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | Tuesday, 25 October 2016 | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - Tashkent ..

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is compiling a list of Israeli companies operating in occupied Palestinian territories that will be used as a database for the organization’s 57 member countries to implement an agreement that boycotts Israeli products.
“The OIC Secretariat has been requested to provide an up-to-date database on Israeli companies that produce materials or goods in the occupied territories. The database would later be agreed upon for the boycott," the Foreign Ministry's multilateral affairs director general Hasan Kleib told reporters on Monday.
He was responding to journalists’ questions on the results from the recent OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Kleib further explained that the boycott agreed by OIC member countries during a conference earlier this year would not be implemented on all Israeli products, but only for those produced in the occupied territories—the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.
While the primary focus was toward Israeli companies, it would be deemed disappointing if foreign companies were also operating in the aforementioned areas, as this opposed the global dissenting voice against Israel, he said.
Kleib further said foreign companies that cooperated with Israel in the occupied territories would also be boycotted, even if they were not based on Palestinian soil.
“Products, plantation goods or textiles manufactured in the occupied territories would be labeled so that OIC member countries can implement the boycott and never buy the products," he said. The move would hopefully deter settlers by creating an undesirable economic condition, he added.

UNICEF: 3 million Syrian children out of school or at risk of dropping out

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - New York ..

With the start of the school year in the war-ravaged Syria, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said more than 1.7 million children remain out of school and another 1.3 million are at a risk of dropping out, as the number of school attacks exceeding 4,000.
“In Syria, children are risking death to go to school. In the past two weeks, nine schoolchildren, aged as young as five, lost their lives in two separate attacks on or near schools,” UNICEF Representative in Syria Hanaa Singer said in a statement issued over the weekend.
She said one in three schools cannot be used because they are either damaged, destroyed, sheltering the internally displaced or are being used for military purposes, adding that since the war began in 2011, there have been more than 4,000 attacks on schools.

Impact of Brexit on future of three million British Muslims

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - London ..

It is obviously a legitimate question to ask how the U.K.’s leaving the European Union (EU) will affect three million British Muslims when the population of Muslims in Europe is relatively insignificant.
According to a research by the Pew Research Centre (PRC), even with a steady increase, there will be only 8 percent Muslims in Europe by 2030. Therefore, on the surface Brexit should have very little impact on Muslims.
Brexit debates hardly mentioned the EU as a “Muslim” issue and there was no overt mention of the words “Islam” and “Muslims” by Brexit campaigners. However, if we look deep into the matter, we will find three important factors emerging that bring Muslims at the forefront of the problem.
The first thing to look at is the statistics of abuse, insults and attacks British Muslims are facing after Brexit. The level of Islamophobic attacks rose sharply after the referendum results, with the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) reporting a hundred anti-Muslim hate crimes during the weekend after the referendum alone.
There has been a sharp increase of verbal and physical abuse against Muslims online and on the streets, including prominent politicians and journalists being asked to “go home”. A large number of the abused are Muslim women, particularly those who wear the hijab. According to a report by Tell MAMA, an organization that measures anti-Muslim attacks, “Women were more likely to be attacked or abused while travelling on public transport to town and city centers or when shopping.”
It is true that there have been several attacks on eastern Europeans with Polish centers vandalized and even a Polish individual was killed in a racist incident, yet the number of abuses Muslims have received is much higher compared to eastern Europeans.
Secondly, the debate over immigration often ends with bringing up the “Muslim problem”. Nigel Farage’s poster of refugees with the heading “breaking point” just before the referendum is an illustration of how the Brexit campaign covertly attacked Muslims. As much as the Tory Brexit leaders distanced themselves from the charismatic former UKIP leader, it has no doubt influenced a large number of people to unleash their hatred towards Muslims.
The third reason to believe that Brexit is likely to exacerbate attacks on an already alienated British Muslim community is the bizarre fear mongering of the likelihood of Turkey joining the EU by all sections of the Brexit campaigners.
Brexit has divided the nation, but its immediate aftermath has already shown signs of a worrying future for the ethnic minorities. While it will be hugely unfair to suggest that 52 percent of the population who voted to leave are racists, there is a genuine cause for concern due to the political direction of post-Brexit Britain.
Compared to many countries in the West, Britain is still one of the best countries for Muslims to practice their religion and manifest their faith in public. How long they will be able to maintain this freedom remains uncertain, as the country has entered into unchartered territories after the Brexit vote.
Early signs are not too encouraging and the political situation also gives a bleak picture of what is to come. The only encouraging sign so far is that politicians from all sides, including UKIP have strongly condemned racist attacks on ethnic minorities after the referendum.

U.N. appoints Wonder Woman as honorary ambassador amid outcry

ARAB GAZETTE - United Nations ..

The United Nations named comic-book superhero Wonder Woman as an honorary ambassador to fight for gender equality on Friday, amid criticism that the scantily clad fictional character was an inappropriate choice.

U.N. officials at a ceremony formalizing the appointment said Wonder Woman is known for her commitment to justice, peace and equality.

"Wonder Woman is an icon," said U.N. Under-Secretary-General Cristina Gallach. "We are very pleased that this character will help us reach new audiences with essential messages of our empowerment and equality."

U.N. officials have said they hoped the selection of a comic-book hero and movie character would appeal to younger women in its campaign for womens empowerment, and the slogan of the campaign says: "Think of all the wonders we can do."

Wonder Woman, a DC Comics Inc. heroine, first appeared in 1942, fighting villains, rescuing victims and unearthing diabolical plots.

On hand was actress Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in a television series in the 1970s, and actress Gal Gadot, who will play Wonder Woman in a movie to be released next year.

"I couldnt think of a more perfect role for her," said Carter, saying the character shows women can be "smart and beautiful and strong and wise and kind and brave."

But the selection has been met with opposition, and nearly 1,000 people signed an online petition asking U.N.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to reconsider the choice.

"Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent warrior woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the characters current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit," the petition reads.

Several dozen U.N. employees, one holding a sign saying "Women deserve a real ambassador," staged a silent protest in the U.N.s visitors lobby as the ceremony was held.

"Why do we need to use a sexualized cartoon character?" said employee Elizabeth Leff.
MINSK, October 25. /TASS/. Minsk is prepared to host a meeting of the Contact Group on the settlement in eastern Ukraine and its three working subgroups, Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Dmitry Mironchik, told TASS on Tuesday.
"We are getting ready for the meetings of the Trilateral Contact Group on the settlement in Ukraine and its three working subgroups - on political, economic and security issues - scheduled for Wednesday," the diplomat said.

ARAB GAZETTE - RABAT ..

Morocco's Wydad Casablanca has fired John Toshack as manager of the team, following a heavy defeat in the CAF Champions League semifinal against Zamalek.
Wydad took the decision after 4-0 disastrous loss in Alexandria, Egypt, saying the former Real Madrid and Wales manager's contract had been "terminated with immediate effect", the club said in a statement on Saturday.
"We offered John Toshack's staff all the necessary financial, technical and logistical conditions in order to achieve a good result," the club said, adding that Friday's failure showed "a real management problem."
After taking charge in June 2014, he led Wydad to the Moroccan title in his first campaign and followed with the runners-up spot last season to secure African Champions League football. But, the 67-year-old manager had a tough season debut after his team also disqualified from Morocco's Cup last week.
Toshack was a legendary player for Cardiff City, Liverpool and Wales and, as a manager, won a Spanish league title with Real Madrid and led Swansea City from the bottom division to the summit of English football.
Apart from his six years as manager of Wales, Toshack's two years with Wydad is his longest spell in a job since 2000.

Egypt’s Red Sea gem: Sharm El-Sheikh grappling with tourism decline

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - CAIRO ..

The number of tourists visiting Egypt declined significantly following the crash of the Russian aeroplane in Sinai in late October 2015, which had a heavy negative impact on the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh.
The city, once the country’s tourism gem on Sinai’s Red Sea coast, has had to adjust to a significantly lower number of visitors, with many hotels shutting their doors and employees seeing a significant cut to their salaries.
The number of tourists coming to Egypt declined by 52% in the first half of the year, with a total of 2.3m tourists visiting compared to 4.8m tourists in the same period last year.
Daily News Egypt took a tour of Sharm El-Sheikh to observe the state of tourism in the resort city 10 months after the Russian aeroplane crash. To understand the status of the city, Daily News Egypt spoke to tourism sector employees, hotels, and shopkeepers to get a glimpse at the repercussions of dwindling tourism numbers.

Hotel employees: income declines as fewer tourists opt for Sharm El-Sheikh as a vacation spot
The Russian aeroplane crash led to a severe decline in the number of foreign tourists visiting Sharm El-Sheikh, which pushed some hotels to lay off some of their employees. As a direct result, the 12% service charge that goes to hotel workers decreased and monthly tips declined by more than 50%.
Reception supervisor Eid Ibrahim said that the majority of hotels in Sharm El-Sheikh looked to lower their expenses by 50% under the losses in revenues they incurred in recent months.
He noted that all hotel departments are currently operating with just half the number of staff members, explaining that the average basic salary in the reception department starts at EGP 500 and goes up to EGP 900. Ibrahim noted that the 12% service charge currently ranges from 50 to 55 piasters per employee.
Ibrahim explained that the salaries of those who make EGP 500 per month reach approximately EGP 750 after the service charge is added. The 12% service charge can occasionally reach up to EGP 1, but some hotels do not apply the earned service charge to salaries for months, according to Ibrahim.
Cleaner Ahmed El Sayyed said that last year, the value of tips ranged between EGP 5,000 and EGP 8,000 per month, noting that tourism in the city is mostly dependent on foreign guests.
Restaurant manager Mohamed Hanafy said that the salaries of new employees range between EGP 400 and EGP 600, explaining that the 12% service charge last year varied between EGP 1.5 and EGP 2.
Hanafy believes that some hotels resorted to decreasing the number of employees as an attempt to decrease expenses, while some other hotels offered different service jobs when the local tourism rate started to increase. However, there was not a high demand for these jobs because of the low salaries offered.
Cleaner Ramy Hasan said that the tips he used to make from foreign guests can go from $5 to $20 daily; however, tips no longer reach those heights. Currently, the average daily tip does not exceed EGP 20. Hasan added that some workers have resorted to working extra shifts to meet their financial needs.

Dubai Airports raises AED 1.25 million for Orbis Flying Eye Hospital

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - DUBAI ..

Dubai Airports and its partners have raised AED 1.25 million (approximately US$ 340,600) for Orbis, the international eye care charity organisation best known for its flying eye hospital, through their ‘Your Sight, Our Happiness’ campaign.
The amount raised is enough to help restore the sight of as many as 31,000 children suffering from cataracts worldwide.
Launched in March earlier this year under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Airports, the campaign involved a number of activities to raise funds for the noble cause.
The event hosted a special charity luncheon sponsored by Emirates Flight Catering where corporate entities could donate by sponsoring tables while individuals attending the event were offered the opportunity to sponsor cataract eye surgeries through donation coupons worth AED 40 per surgery.
The highlight of the campaign was the Plane Pull contest where 10 teams from across the airport community took the challenge to pull National Air Cargo’s 747 aircraft the furthest distance. Each team also made a contribution for the Orbis charity via the UAE Red Crescent. Sporting contests such as basketball, foosball and bowling were also organised with participants playing blindfolded to raise awareness about daily challenges faced by those with visual impairments.
Describing the campaign as a huge success Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports said, "We are very happy with the outcome of the campaign. It is deeply satisfying to know that the collective efforts and generosity of employees of Dubai Airports and our partners, as well as the support and contribution from corporate entities will help improve the lives of thousands of children by restoring their sight."

X Factor 2016: Honey G's family are mortified by her antics

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - LONDOM ..

Considering the favourable attention Honey G’s mum gets every week on The X Factor, you’d be forgiven for assuming that the aspiring rapper’s family are completely behind the X Factor hopeful.
However, an anonymous relative has opened up about the humiliation 35-year-old Honey G’s antics have brought upon the family as they admitted that it’s “painful” to watch her week after week.

And, to be fair, we’d probably feel the same way if she was our relative too.
Honey G, real name Anna Guildford, has sparked controversy during her stint on the ITV talent show, with viewers arguing that she is being favoured by producers despite being a novelty act - and her family are getting fed-up of watching her be mocked in front of millions of people.
Speaking to the Daily Star, the relative explained: “To the nation Honey G is funny to watch but to her family it’s embarrassing.

"She has always lived in the shadow of her sister and finally this is her time to get attention - but it’s painful to watch.
"Anna is a very sensitive soul and to watch her being mocked by the nation is upsetting.”
Simon Cowell praised Honey G following her Saturday night performance of Vanilla Ice’s ‘Ice Ice Baby’ and Queen’s 'Under Pressure’, telling the hopeful: “Because of your enthusiasm and your love for what you’re doing, you’re turning this around.”

And although viewers love to moan about her, she’s obviously doing something right as she is so far breezing her way through the competition - we’re just wondering how much longer she will last.

Singapore becomes IEA association country

ARAB GAZETTE - SINGAPORE, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) ..

Singapore has joined the International Energy Agency (IEA) as an association country, Singapore's Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran and Executive Director of IEA Fatih Birol jointly made the announcement on Monday.
As a regional energy hub in the heart of Southeast Asia, becoming an association country is particularly important for Singapore, said the country's Ministry of Trade and Industry and IEA in a joint statement.
As an IEA association country, Singapore will build on existing collaborations to partner IEA on two new initiatives: to host a new Singapore-IEA regional training hub for programs, and to host an annual Singapore-IEA Forum.
S Iswaran said becoming an association country will allow Singapore to further participate in the global energy dialogue, and keep abreast of new technical developments in the energy sector.
The minister also stressed Singapore fully supports the IEA's vision to expand its outreach to emerging economies, particularly in Asia.
"We look forward to a fruitful partnership with the IEA, underpinned by substantive activities for the benefit of all regional and international stakeholders," said S Iswaran.
Fatih Birol noted that Singapore is an important player both regionally and globally and has put in place strong policies to ensure secure, sustainable and competitive energy supply.
"We look forward to building even stronger ties between the IEA and Singapore, especially because it is in a strategic position to support the energy transition in Southeast Asia," he added.
Singapore is the fourth country to join the IEA under the association country initiative after China, Indonesia and Thailand became association countries in November 2015.

News Analysis: Turkey's rhetoric on Mosul related to security concerns: experts

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - ANKARA, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) ..

The reason Turkey insists on participating in the battle to free the Iraqi city Mosul from the Islamic State (IS) militants, in addition to Turkish president's declared nostalgia for the Ottoman dominion, is that the country has security concerns about the terror threats and mass migration it may face, local experts say.
The president's comments are not simply an "Ottoman nostalgia," but a reflection on the possible security outcomes of the Mosul operations in Iraq, Serhat Erkmen, an associate professor from 21st Century Turkey Institute told Xinhua.
"We will be in the field and at the table. Our preparations are underway," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Oct. 17, referring to the current Mosul battle.
He cited "Misaki Milli," a document adopted by the Turkish parliament in 1920 that claimed Mosul as part of modern Turkey. Mosul was once part of the Ottoman Empire.
Erkmen said Erdogan recalled Turkish "historical responsibility" in Mosul to raise public awareness about the battle and pursue international legitimacy for the country's participation in it.
"Turkey will not remain a spectator on issues that threaten its security," the president said on Saturday.
Turkish leaders are worrying about the power vacuum in its neighboring country and the possible influx of refugees during and after the battle in Mosul, said Erkmen.
Consequently, Turkey will be "at the table" in Mosul despite no invitation from the Iraqi government or the coalition forces, since the coalition forces cannot act in Iraq without the role of neighboring countries, he added.
Bilgay Duman, a Middle East expert from the Center for Middle Eastern Strategic Studies, agreed that who will rule the province after the battle is what worries Ankara.
Turkey is concerned that the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the IS militants or other terror groups may take advantage of such power vacuum, the expert said.
Duman said the PKK took hold of Sinjar after the northern Iraqi town was cleared of IS militants in late 2015, due to the inability of the Iraqi government to control it.
Last week, the Iraqi army, backed by the U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, launched a much-anticipated military offensive to retake Mosul, which was overrun by the IS in 2014.

Mistral sales to Russia by Egypt pure nonsense - Kremlin

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | Sunday, 23 October 2016 | Posted in ,

An exterior view of the Egyptian Mistral amphibious assault ship named 'Gamal Abdel Nasser' anchored at the Saint Nazaire shipyard, France, 15 May 2016. The two Mistral class amphibious assault ships were sold to Egypt after their sale to Russia was blocked in 2014 in protest of Moscow's role in the Ukrainian conflict.

ARAB GAZETTE - CAIRO ..

Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz's claim that Egypt sold two French Mistral warships to Russia for one dollar is nonsense, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Friday. He added that the Polish side was basing its claims on unreliable sources.

On Thursday in the Polish Sejm (lower house) Macierewicz said the ships, which were to be sold to Egypt after France's withdrawal from a deal with Russia in connection with the unresolved Ukraine crisis, were resold to Russia by Egypt for one US dollar.

Commenting Macierewicz's words in a TV interview, Peskov said the Polish side had its information from "unsure sources" and opined that the minister's statement could be ascribed to the "overemotional atmosphere in Warsaw over recent weeks".

The ships, initially to be supplied to Russia towards the end of 2014, were to be purchased by Egypt after France made the deal dependent on the resolution of the Ukraine conflict under pressure from allies.

Iraqi army drives Islamic State from Christian region near Mosul

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

arab gazette - cairo ..

Iraqi army troops on Saturday stormed into a Christian region that has been under Islamic State control since 2014 as part of U.S.-backed operations to clear the entrances to Mosul, the militants' last major city stronghold in Iraq. The advance took place as U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter met Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Baghdad to evaluate the campaign that began on Monday with air and ground support from the U.S-led coalition.
A military statement said Iraqi units entered the center of Qaraqosh, a mainly Christian town about 20 km (13 miles) southeast of Mosul, and were carrying out mop-up operations across the town.
Further action was under way to seize a neighboring Christian village, Karamless, also known as Karemlash in the Syriac language. The region's population fled in the summer of 2014, when Islamic State swept in.
Earlier this week, Iraqi special units also captured Bartella, a Christian village north of Qaraqosh.
A U.S. military official estimated there were fewer than a couple of hundred Islamic State fighters in Qaraqosh.
"I've seen berms in Qaraqosh. I anticipate there'll be trenches, there'll be passageways between different buildings," the official added, speaking on condition of anonymity.
BIGGEST BATTLE SINCE 2003
The offensive on Mosul is expected to become the biggest battle fought in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 and it could require a massive humanitarian relief operation.
Some 1.5 million residents remain in the city and worst-case scenario forecasts see up to a million being uprooted, according to the United Nations. U.N. aid agencies said the fighting has so far forced about 6,000 to flee their homes.

THE GIRLS IN THE VAN

“Just like ‘The Boys on the Bus’ did a generation ago, ‘The Girls in the Van’ gives us an intimate portrait of a major political campaign.” —Gail Sheehy, author of “Hillary’s Choice”
“An entertaining, bouncy romp... an illuminating glimpse... The result is an insider's view of a female reporter grappling with a groundbreaking campaign.” —The New York Times Book Review
Hillary is up in the polls! Hillary is down in the polls!
She’s a feminist and women love her; she’s an enabler and women hate her.
She’s brilliant and hardworking; she’s entitled and untrustworthy.
Sounds like Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 2016 or even 2008 presidential campaign, right? Well, go back even farther to the year 2000 to discover how every one of those phrases was uttered during Hillary’s very first campaign when she made history as the only first lady to ever run for office. That groundbreaking bid for U.S. Senate in New York made headlines around the world, coming as it did on the heels of her husband’s scandalous affair with a White House intern.
Reporter Beth J. Harpaz was there, covering this political whirlwind for The Associated Press, and her book, “The Girls in the Van” revisits every key moment of the race. This funny, fascinating account puts you in the press van that followed Hillary from Buffalo to Brooklyn as she fought a cast of familiar characters, including New York’s pugnacious Mayor Rudy Giuliani. It’s filled with all the successes and missteps, the kind that plagued the assumed front-runner’s 2008 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, which instead went to a young Senator from Illinois named Barack Obama. Now, updated with new perspectives from the author and an introduction by National Politics Reporter Lisa Lerer, “The Girls in the Van” offers a window into Hillary’s vulnerabilities, strengths and the inner workings of the Clinton machine, all told with authority, humor and the benefit of hindsight.

Wall Street advanced on Tuesday to give the S&P 500 its best day this month on the heels of solid earnings reports from names such as UnitedHealth and Netflix that put corporate profits on track to snap a four-quarter streak of declines.Of the 52 S&P 500 companies that have reported results to date for the third quarter, 81 percent have reported earnings that topped average analyst estimates, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Third-quarter earnings are now expected to show growth of 0.2 percent, which would mark an end to the U.S. profit recession that began in the third quarter of 2015.
If the quarter stays on track, it will be the first time since the fourth-quarter of 2014 in which both earnings and revenue of S&P 500 companies increased.
"We had some decent earnings results," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank in Chicago.
"Given companies' track record of beating expectations, investors believe this will be the first quarter in five where we have positive earnings growth."
The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI rose 75.54 points, or 0.42 percent, to 18,161.94, the S&P 500 .SPX gained 13.1 points, or 0.62 percent, to 2,139.6 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC added 44.01 points, or 0.85 percent, to 5,243.84.
Gains were broad, with each of the 11 major S&P sectors in positive territory, led by a 1.1 percent gain in healthcare .SPXHC, boosted by a UnitedHealth's (UNH.N) 6.9 percent jump after quarterly results and forecast.
Gains in the sector were curbed by a 2.6-percent decline in Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N), while Pfizer (PFE.N) gained 0.6 percent on plans to ship a cheaper biosimilar to Remicade, JNJ's top selling product. The news overshadowed J&J's slight earnings beat.
Netflix (NFLX.O) was the biggest advancer on the S&P 500, rising more than 19 percent after posting quarterly results and much higher-than-expected subscriber growth.
Goldman Sachs (GS.N) rose 2.2 percent after the bank's results blew past Wall Street estimates, mirroring the performance of its Wall Street peers and helping lift the NYSE Arca Broker/Dealers index .XBD 1.1 percent.
Among the decliners, IBM (IBM.N), fell 2.6 percent after reporting its 18th straight quarter of revenue decline.
