Serena lands in New Zealand ahead of season opener

ARAB GAZETTE - Auckland..

Newly-engaged Serena Williams touched down in Auckland on Friday and quickly made her way to the court to hit some balls ahead of the start of her 2017 season.

The 22-times grand slam singles champion announced her engagement on Thursday to Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of the social media company Reddit, who accompanied her to New Zealand for the ASB Classic which starts on Thursday.

American Williams, 35, is top seed for the tournament, a warm-up event for the Australian Open grand slam later in January, and she was whisked through a crowded airport, telling reporters she was excited to be in New Zealand for the first time.

"It's fun to go to new places," the world number two said.

Serena's older sister Venus is also competing in Auckland, an event she won in 2015, and said she was delighted to hear about her sibling's engagement.

Serena said it was unlikely the duo, who have won 14 grand slam doubles titles together, would team up to play in New Zealand.

"Probably not. I wish, we will see," Serena said.

Harden, Harrell ignite Rockets in rout of Clippers

ARAB GAZETTE - (The Sports Xchange)..

James Harden recorded his seventh triple-double of the season while Montrezl Harrell scored a career-high 29 points off the bench to fuel the Houston Rockets' 140-116 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

Harden finished with 30 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists while Harrell helped finish off the Clippers with 13 fourth-quarter points.

Houston led by 25 points midway through the second quarter but needed Harden and Harrell to carry it to victory.

Reserve guard Raymond Felton paired 26 points with eight assists off the bench while centre DeAndre Jordan added 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers, who dropped their fifth consecutive game.

Los Angeles guard Austin Rivers and coach Doc Rivers were ejected 25 seconds apart in the second quarter, with the former sent to the locker room following his contact with official J.T. Orr.

"I didn't do anything wrong," Austin Rivers said. "I reacted to the play. I had no idea (Orr) was there. I was backing up and I said, 'Call the foul.' When I did it I was turning and he was right there and my elbow touched him. I've never in my career put my hands on a ref and I don't ever plan to.

"I didn't mean to touch him. I didn't do anything wrong. I'll stand by that. I didn't do anything wrong."

Instead of coming undone, the shorthanded Clippers rallied following the ejections.

Rockets forward Ryan Anderson sank the technical free throw after the ejection of the elder Rivers, boosting the Houston lead to 60-35 with 6:13 remaining in the first half.

Keyed by a pair of three-pointers by Marreese Speights, the Clippers fought back with an 18-4 run that cut the deficit to 64-53.

Houston scored a season-high 74 points in the first half but their defense was in tatters after Speights put the Clippers on his back.

In the third, Felton and Jordan combined for 32 points with Jordan adding seven rebounds and Felton four assists, to whittle a 17-point deficit at the break to 102-96 at the 1:23 mark.

The Clippers shot 17 of 27 in the third quarter to reduce the deficit to 10 points, before the Rockets pulled away in the final quarter.

"We handled our business," Harden said. "Made some shots and got some stops when we needed to and finished the game off."

Weightlifter Amna Al Haddad Paves The Way For Arab Women

Weightlifter Amna Al Haddad Paves The Way For Arab Women

ARAB GAZETTE - BY: Alexandria Gouveia..

“One day, I woke up and realised I couldn’t continue living like this,” exclaims Amna al Haddad, who at 19 began a journey that would transform her life and make her a role model among women in the Middle East – something she never expected.

Now 26, Amna Al Haddad, has inadvertently smashed through the glass ceiling, defied stereotypes and become a positive and inspiring figurehead for women in the region.

Don’t let Amna’s petite frame fool you, as the young sports star is an Olympic weightlifter and currently trying to qualify for the Olympic Games in Brazil in 2016. She has also made history by being the first Emirati and GCC national to compete in the Asia Regionals and the first and only Muslim woman to do so in a headscarf.

No surprise then that she is part of Nike’s latest campaign Inner Strength (she was previously involved in the brand’s New Year’s Resolutions/Better For It global campaign back in January). Amna’s strength and courage make her the perfect ambassador for the brand), with both campaign films revealing how she pushes herself to the limit and inspiring us to do the same.

In the film Amna Al Haddad speaks about how it’s never too late to make a change once you put your mind to it. Advice she is all too familiar with.

Before her flourishing sports career, she was the last person who cared about working out. But that’s just one of the many things that makes her journey so exciting. Emirates Woman interviewed her to find out more…

Tell us how you became a weightlifter

My fitness journey began when I was about 19 years old. I was leading a very unhealthy lifestyle, eating all the wrong things and doing nothing about it. One day, I woke up and realised I couldn’t continue living like that. So I took it upon myself to take much needed action and go for a run at Dubai’s Safa Park. That was where it all began. Once I got my adrenaline fix from the run I decided that there was no going back.

How did you go from jogging in the park to becoming a weightlifter?

I joined CrossFit and after participating in only a few sessions, I decided to compete at the CrossFit Games Open. I then gradually progressed to the CrossFit Games Asia Regionals in Seoul South Korea in 2012 where I paved the path for Emirati, GCC, and Arab women as I was the first one to ever participate.

“I paved the path for Arab women as I was the first one to ever participate”

Through Crossfit, I fell in love with weightlifting and made the decision to focus on weightlifting for four years and thus far have been successful with nine gold medals at an International Weightlifting Federation event, in which six were gold and three were silver on the Arab, West Asian and Asian categories respectively.

What reactions do you get about your sporting career?

I ‘ve gotten many different reactions, many positive, however the negative is unavoidable and that’s where sport education is important. My family have been supportive of my journey, although I know my mother would love the day when I am past my competitive career.

How hard has it been for you as a woman to be accepted in the sporting world?

It is very difficult, unfortunately. First, being an athlete in general is not always perceived as a career, especially in the Middle East. Secondly, as a woman, I have to work twice as hard to get half of what men do through sports. That’s the reality of the situation and what I’ve experienced in the last four years in my competitive career. In this journey, I am fighting misconceptions about women athletes, our talents and capabilities both in the field and our role in the society. Sport education is very important at this stage and age.

How does it feel to be one of the UAE’s promising young athletes?

It’s an important role for me and it’s a role I take seriously as I aim to spread awareness, educate, be a role model and speak to people about what it means to be an athlete. I’m an average person who turned an unhealthy situation into Olympic success. If I can do it, everyone with a strong will can do it, too.

 What is your training like?

It depends on the training cycles and expected competitions. It could range from anywhere between 12 to 20 hours of training a week, with double training sessions during competitive cycles. My training sessions vary between five to seven sessions, with each session being at least two hours. I’m currently training towards the April 2016 Continental Qualifier in Uzbekistan.

What are your hopes for the 2016 Olympics?

I’ve trained very hard and fought many battles, and know what’s meant to be, will be. Whether I qualify or not, I know I have achieved quite a lot in a span of four years and am well aware that in the grand scheme of things, the Olympics is a small part of my journey. I’ve learned a lot through my experiences, and only plan to continue it.

When not training how do you spend your time?

I write, read, educate myself and I love fostering kittens.

What’s the most exciting thing about being a Nike athlete?

I’m thrilled to be part of the Nike athlete team, because Nike is a true champion company that cares for their athletes be it in their development or their involvement in society. Plus, who would say no to awesome, fashionable and hip clothes that are especially tailor-made to enhance athlete performance? It’s a great step forward and I believe this is beginning of many great things to come.

Bookmark This: How To Stay Healthy When You Have A Desk Job

ARAB GAZETTE - BY: Guest Writer..

Think your long office hours are only playing havoc with your work-life balance? Think again. Family and lifestyle medicine physician, Dr Yasmin Ohlsson, says the key to good health starts at your desk…

With our ever increasing recognition of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, it’s no surprise that workplace wellness is a hot topic these days. From standing desks to cycling during board meetings, some of the most innovative and forward-thinking global businesses are setting the bar pretty high – and rightly so. After all, we spend an average of over a decade of our lives at work, a fair amount of this chained to our desks.

Chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity are the greatest causes of disability and death on the planet today, far outnumbering the effects of infectious diseases like TB, cholera and even ebola combined. In the UAE, 19 per cent of the population suffers from diabetes, and that figure doesn’t include those who are borderline diabetics, suffering from what the medical community calls ‘pre-diabetes’.

The majority of these chronic conditions are preventable, and are a direct result of the lifestyle choices we make. Sedentary living, poor nutrition, sleep deprivation, sky-rocketing stress levels and declining emotional wellbeing are just some of the factors that can contribute to our chances of developing one or more of these diseases.

Although the physical effects of modern day living are incredibly important, stress and depression are major issues too, with research underway into the effects of work on our mental health. In a recent poll, 78 per cent of Americans described their jobs as stressful, and it would be surprising if this figure wasn’t similar or even higher in other countries.

Of course, with declining health come more sick days, lower productivity, more mistakes, higher medical costs and reduced team morale. But what do we expect when most of us work in high-pressure jobs that require little or no physical activity and leave barely any time to eat or drink? It was this realisation that ultimately led to the international workplace wellness focus we’re seeing at the moment.

Depending on the business, workplace wellness can really include anything from a one-off blood pressure check to offering free fresh fruit. However, I believe the best and most successful programmes are those that aim to educate staff whilst creating lasting behavioural change, whether through talks, workshops or other activities. It’s essential to empower people with the knowledge they need to make better decisions and also to show them how to challenge their current habits and create new ones. Because healthy habits shouldn’t be limited to time at home or to time at the office. Instead, they should become a way of life.

So whose responsibility is it to ensure staff are kept healthy and happy? Businesses? Individuals? Or should governments be passing legislation to protect the health of their working populations? As with most of these sorts of dilemmas, it’s ideally all of the above. But it takes years for legislation to be passed and, although corporate wellness initiatives are becoming more and more popular, not every workplace has one – and even if yours does, at the end of the day it’s really up to you to make a change and maintain it. So whether your work has a health programme in place or not, here’s what you can do to start your own wellness revolution and spread the healthy living message.

Don’t keep a water bottle at your desk

It might sound counterintuitive, but there are real advantages to having a glass that you refill at the water cooler whenever you want a drink. It’s not only good for the environment but gets you up and moving regularly. It will also help send the subliminal message that no one needs to be stuck to their chair the whole day. By being less sedentary, you will improve your own physical and mental health whilst showing your team that it really is ok to get up.

Value face-to-face contact

Don’t email or call a colleague. Walk to their desk and talk to them. This is actually great for building better team relationships and boosting morale, but again, it also incorporates some physical activity into your day. We are still social creatures and need human interaction, no matter how connected we are online.
Dare to stand during meetings

It may seem awkward at first, but no doubt your colleagues will begin to question whether they should be standing too. You might even start a trend. Of course, standing may not always be appropriate or practical, but if you persevere you’ll soon wonder how you managed to get through those long meetings without doing so. Standing meetings are slowly becoming more commonplace, so why not become your own company’s wellness pioneer?

Breakfast, Lunch And Dinner With The Body Coach

ARAB GAZETTE - BY: Alexandria Gouveia..

The Body Coach aka Joe Wicks has transformed men and women the world over thanks to his The 90 Day Fat Loss Plan. So, when we heard he was coming to the UAE for the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature we got the health guru to provide a day’s worth of delicious, and healthy recipes…

Described as the Jamie Oliver of nutrition, social media star Joe Wicks is the go-to guru for healthy dishes that can be cooked in a matter of minutes and HIIT workouts that are guaranteed to burn fat. Making the most of his visit to the region we got the Body Coach to share three recipes to takes us from breakfast, lunch and dinner…

Breakfast :
NUT AND MANGO SMOOTHIE
Serves 1

This fruity smoothie is ideal for a last-minute breakfast on the go. With healthy fats and a scoop of protein powder, this is way better for you than any bowl of boxed cereal. Try not to get into the habit of having smoothies every day, though. As I always say, real food wins over dust every time.

INGREDIENTS

125g sliced mango

2 tbsp almond or cashew butter

handful of ice cubes

handful of raspberries

2 tbsp full-fat Greek yoghurt

1 scoop (30g) vanilla or strawberry protein powder

100ml almond milk

METHOD

Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

TOP TIP: Warning! Don’t go nuts with your nuts. While they are a great source of protein, fibre and essential fats, nuts also contain lots of calories. It’s very easy to crack open a 200g bag and finish the lot without feeling full. But remember every gram of fat contains nine calories, so overeating nuts will not help with your fat loss. I recommend a snack portion of 25–30g. Also, try to get a variety of different nuts as they contain different vitamins. Almonds, walnuts and cashews are my personal favourites.

Lunch:
JOE’S McLEANIE BURGER
Serves 2

Another burger recipe? Guilty. Well, I did say I love burgers. And remember a turkey is not just for Christmas – combined with all these tasty ingredients, you really won’t be disappointed with this super-lean hero burger.

INGREDIENTS

400g turkey mince

3 tsp fish sauce

½ bunch of coriander, leaves only, roughly chopped

2 tsp sesame oil

4 spring onions, finely sliced

salt and pepper

2 burger buns

2 tbsp full-fat Greek yoghurt

3 tsp chipotle paste

sliced tomato and lettuce leaves, to serve

METHOD

Preheat your grill to its highest setting.

Chuck the turkey, fish sauce, coriander, sesame oil and spring onions into a large bowl. Season generously with salt and pepper, then get your hands stuck in and work the ingredients well. The more you work the meat, the better the burgers will hold together when cooked. Shape the meat into two equal patties.

Place the patties on your grill pan or a baking tray and grill the burgers for 5 minutes on each side or until they are totally cooked through. Check by slicing into one of the patties to make sure the meat is white all the way through, with no raw pink bits left.

Meanwhile, cut your burger buns in half. Mix together the yoghurt and chipotle paste and spread over the burger buns. When your burgers are cooked, remove from the grill and build your dream burger, stacking it up with tomato and lettuce – the bigger, the better.
Dinner

GOAN-FISH-CURRY joe wicks the body coach

GOAN FISH CURRY
Serves 2

You don’t need to go to India to enjoy a good curry. This recipe is surprisingly easy, but tastes incredible. If you’re not fond of fish, you could always use 250g of skinless chicken breast fillet instead. This is a good meal to batch-cook and freeze when you’re prepping like a boss . . .

INGREDIENTS

3 cloves garlic, roughly chopped

3cm ginger, roughly chopped

1 green chilli, roughly chopped – remove the seeds if you don’t like it hot

2 tomatoes, roughly chopped

1 tbsp coconut oil

1 red onion, diced

1 tbsp garam masala

1 tbsp ground cumin

1 x 400ml tin of full-fat coconut milk

500g haddock fillet, skinned and cut into large chunks

juice of 1 lime

½ bunch of coriander, leaves only, roughly chopped

METHOD

Blitz the garlic, ginger, chilli and tomatoes in a food processor until smooth, then leave to one side.

Melt the oil in a wok or large frying pan over a medium to high heat. Throw in the onion and fry for 2 minutes, stirring regularly. Sprinkle in the garam masala and cumin and fry, stirring continuously, for 30 seconds. Pour in the blitzed ingredients and bring to the boil before pouring in the coconut milk. Return to the boil again, then let it simmer for 2 minutes.

Add the haddock pieces to the curry, and bring back to a simmer. Cook the fish for about 3 minutes, or until it is just cooked through.

Why Huda Beauty’s, Mona Kattan, Is Not Threatened By Kylie Cosmetics

ARAB GAZETTE - by: Katrina Mitzeliotis..

When it comes to brains and beauty, the Kattan sisters are the total package — and Mona Kattan is just as forthcoming with her business ventures as she is her beauty routine, as she opened up about everything from handling competition in the marketplace to botox and fillers — and she even filled us in on what’s next from the Dollhouse and Huda Beauty.

We got to catch up with Mona Kattan, co-owner of The Dollhouse and Huda Beauty business partner, at her gorgeous, Instagram-worthy, full-service salon in Dubai, where she opened up the doors to the picturesque space and even shared some of her personal beauty secrets. Mona and her sisters, Huda and Alya, turned their passion for beauty into a booming business — and it all started when Mona suggested that Huda start a blog in 2010, right before Instagram launched and before Snapchatting was even a part of our vocabulary. Fast-forward to 2016, and the sisters are running a global cosmetics company while Mona is also at the helm of the luxury salon, and Huda is currently the most followed person on Instagram in the United Arab Emirates, with 16 million followers.

With so much competition in the industry, especially with the launch of celebrity lines, it would be easy to get frustrated — but instead, the driven beauty moguls embrace the competition. “I think the more beauty players, the better! Even like salons, for instance,” Mona said. “I’ve had friends who have opened salons and I’ll go to their launches, I’ll post about them, I’ll Snapchat about them and people will come to me and be like, ‘You’re pushing your competitor,’ and I’ll be like, ‘There’s room for everyone! Why not support everybody?’ And when you have more players in the market, quality goes up immediately because people have to compete harder, they push themselves better. I think, with Kylie [Jenner], it’s great. She’s doing wonderful. I think she’s very inspiring and she’s so young to be doing so much.”

In just three years, the Kattan sisters have built a successful beauty empire. The Huda Beauty line launched in Sephora in the Dubai Mall in 2013 and now continues to expand globally, as products are available in the US, Australia, France, the UK, and the Middle East. Up next, they plan to add colored contacts to their growing collection, which already consists of their best-selling, one-of-kind lashes, lip contour pencils, liquid matte lips, eye-shadow palettes, henna tattoos and press-on nails.

The sisters have always had an honest approach to their beauty routines, even openly discussing injectables, like filler and botox. “I just don’t like to fake it,” Mona said. “I do believe in transparency and honesty, especially when you have a following. I feel like you do have a responsibility. Look, you don’t have to put your dirty laundry out there, but I feel like when you have so many people looking up to you as a beauty icon or somebody that’s going to inspire them to do things, you have to be honest because you don’t want to give them unrealistic expectations of what they can do [with products]. I don’t want girls to think: ‘Why aren’t my lips that full?’ Hey, I had help! I had filler and liner and liquid matte, so I think it’s just important to be honest. I don’t want girls to ever feel bad that they don’t have something that I have when I’ve had work done, because that’s only fair for them to know that it’s not completely natural.”

Mona also aims to spread awareness and promote education by being so candid. “Huda’s a blogger, even before she was blogging she was blogging. Before Huda started the blog she was actually sending out email blasts to all her best friends saying these are the best products you have to use. She was just obsessed with sharing knowledge. It’s the same thing with our beauty, we just love to share. If you know something, share it — you might help somebody out. Maybe tell people what not to do with filler, so many people have work done with people who don’t know what they’re doing, with people who aren’t even registered to do the work that they’re doing, and you see all these disasters happening,” she said.

Up next, the beauty-savvy businesswoman hopes to continue to educate The Dollhouse clients. “We’re actually opening up a beauty bar very soon where we’ll do botox and fillers and kind of more intense facials, semi-permanent makeup, microblading. There’s a very big need for education,” she said. “Education is something that needs to be focused on and I plan on doing that when we launch, 100 percent.”

Best Beauty From The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Mona even offered up advice for women out there that are interested in getting botox or fillers for the first time. “I would go for a few consultations before I ever got work done. Research, consultations, research the products that they’re gonna use because there’s so many types of filler, there are types that are more natural-looking. There’s so many different types you can go into. Research is key and consultation is key, I would meet at least three doctors, and see how much work they’re telling you to do. If they’re telling you to do a lot, run away! Run away, because they shouldn’t be,” she said.

She also cautioned against embracing the needle too young. “I definitely think for botox you should wait a long time,” she said. “I think that bad botox makes you look older, and, even botox in general — good or bad, if you do it so young you’re gonna look older.”

From the sparkling chandeliers to the checkered floor, chevron-printed chairs and pink walls, The Dollhouse brings Mona’s passion to life and invites you into its world of glamour. Moving to Dubai at 17 definitely contributed to Mona’s interest in the field. “When I moved here my obsession with salons began, because it is a huge part of the culture,” she said. “Grooming is not abnormal, like in the states it is more ‘do it yourself.’ When I lived in the states I did go to salons, but not that often. It would be for a prom, or a birthday, or a special occasion. Here [in Dubai] people will go in twice a week, three times a week.”

The beauty-focused entrepreneur launched The Dollhouse in 2012 with her friend and business partner, Basma Al Fahim. The full-service salon has it all, offering clients manicures and pedicures, hair and makeup services, eyelash extensions and hair extensions — and it’s only just the beginning, as Mona has her eye set on growth and expansion for the brand. “My goal was to always start a salon and get into beauty. The Dollhouse is something that I had told my dad about even before I studied, I was like: ‘Dad I’m gonna create an awesome salon one day, it’s gonna be the best.’ It’s still not the best, but I’m working on it,” she said. She’s certainly onto something extraordinary.

Famous Kuwaiti female fashion designer jailed

ARAB GAZETTE - Kuwait..

A well-known Kuwaiti female fashion designer was sentenced to three months for cheating a Kuwaiti businesswoman.

The convict conned the businesswoman out of KD 40,000 after persuading her that she would set up a joint fashion project which would be profitable.

The Public Prosecution indicted the woman, who is considered to be a top Arab fashion designer, and referred her to the court of misdemeanor, which handed her a three-month jail term.

The designer kept telling the businesswoman that the project would be opened soon before avoiding her by switching off her cellphone.

Inquiry revealed that the convict had also conned other women. The designer will also face a civil court case.

Korean drama Goblin styles sweeping fashion industry

ARAB GAZETTE - South Korea..

The fashion appearing on tvN’s recent hit drama “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God”, also widely known as "Goblin" has been drawing attention, especially the outfits worn by Gong Yoo and Lee Dong-wook.

Gong Yoo, a model-turned-actor, has shown a keen sense of style since he starred in “The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince” in 2007. These days, he is setting fashion trends with the oversized coats he wears as the goblin Kim Shin in “Guardian.”

Also, One item that has drawn attention is a coat from Lanvin Paris’ 2016 fall-winter collection, which he wore in the third episode of the show. It costs over 4 million won ($3310), but it has already become difficult to find it in stores here.

Other coats that he has worn on the show include those from the latest collections of high-end luxury brands such as Givenchy, Burberry and Tom Ford. Some of them have not even been officially launched in Korea yet. Still, the popularity of these coats shows no sign of slowing down.

Meanwhile, Lee, who plays Grim Reaper Kim in the drama, has been donning all-black suits on the show. Unlike his co-star, his outfits are mostly by young designer brands. Lee’s stylist Nam Ju-hui said, “The items are not difficult to find, but still give off an exceptional vibe.”

“Though his role is Grim Reaper, his fashion is not always so somber, which has led to many fashion brands trying to sponsor him,” added Nam.

Men can eat more on New Year's Eve

Men can eat more on New Year's Eve

ARAB GAZETTE - Rome, (ANSA)

Men will be able to eat more calories than women on New Year's Eve without fear of gaining weight, nutritionist Stefania Ruggeri said Wednesday.
Ruggeri, a researcher at the Council for Research in Agriculture and the analysis of agrarian economy, told a nutrition event in Gaeta that women who want to celebrate with a special dinner but are watching their weight should have a main course of fish while men can have pasta, red meat and consume more alcohol because they lose weight more easily.
The nutritionist also advised women to raise their calcium intake to fight osteoporosis, "especially after they turn 50", noting that "calcium is absorbed from legumes and dried fruit".
She also recommended a menu rich in fibers "because they are filling and there are no insulin peaks".
Overall, men should have a high intake of potassium with bananas, lettuce and vegetables with "robust scientific evidence stressing the importance of lycopene in the diet".
Tomato sauce is also highly recommended and should be preferred over tomatoes, she said.
"The more tomato is cooked, the more it is nutritious", the nutritionist noted, recommending pasta with a tomato sauce and a touch of extra-virgin olive oil.

Islamic art takes centre stage in Dallas

ARAB GAZETTE - Dallas

When the Dallas Museum of Art secured the loan of one of the world’s most significant private collections of Islamic art two years ago, few predicted the resonance it would have today. As the US prepares to inaugurate a president who once proposed banning Muslims from entering the country, the museum is reaffirming its commitment to Islamic art. It is preparing a dedicated gallery on its ground floor for the Keir Collection—2,000 works assembled by the late Hungarian lawyer and collector Edmund de Unger.

“It’s putting Islamic art in a prime location—you can’t miss it,” says Sabiha Al Khemir, the museum’s senior adviser for Islamic art. The 2,200 sq. ft space, which is due to open on 16 April, will present a rotating display of more than 100 works spanning 13 centuries. The stars of the collection, including the lavishly illustrated Mughal manuscript Khamsa of Nizami (around 1585-90), will be shown alongside never-before-seen carpets, pottery and textiles.

During the 15-year loan from de Unger’s family, the museum’s curators also plan to create a digital archive of the trove. The gallery will show the largest presentation of the collection to date, following smaller displays at the Dallas museum earlier this year and at the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin from 2009 to 2012.

Dance-music artists tweet about Indonesian meme Om Telolet Om

ARAB GAZETTE - Jakarta (ANTARA News)

International dance-music artists, such as Zedd, Martin Garrix, and DJ Snake, on Tuesday night tweeted their confusion over the Indonesian meme "Om Telolet Om," which was listed among Twitters national trending topics.

"What does om telolet om mean?" @TheChainsmokers tweeted.

Dutch DJ Oliver Heldens also commented on the meme, suggesting it may be about omelets.

"What is Om Telolet Om? When I read it, I think of omelets/eggs," @OliverHeldens tweeted.

Musician and retired German footballer Michael Ballack also tweeted about the meme: "I keep seeing omteloletom comments. Can someone explain the telolet trend? Thats all I find on reviews of simple websites in indonesia," he tweeted.

"Om Telolet Om" is a local phenomenon where children stand on the street shouting "Om Telolet Om" at passing interprovincial buses. The driver honks their horn in response, and the children cheer.

"Om" means "Sir" or "Uncle," while "telolet" refers to the sound made by a bus horn.

A video demonstrating this activity went viral on social media a month ago.

Initially, it was only seen in Jepara, Central Java, but the fad is now spreading to other regions, including West Java and Sumatra.

Based artist Helen Marten has won this year's Turner Prize, receiving 25,000 pounds at Britain's annual contemporary art award.

Originally from the northern English town of Macclesfield, Marten creates her installations through sculpture, screen printing and writing.

At London's Tate Britain museum, which is displaying the works of all four Turner Prize contenders, she showcased collage-like presentations of everyday day objects such as cotton buds, shoe soles, limes, coins, marbles and eggs.

The award, established in 1984 and named after the English 19th century landscape painter J.M.W. Turner, is given to a British artist under the age of 50.

The prize, whose past winners include Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley and Anish Kapoor, has previously courted controversy for its unconventional choices.

Italy says another 900 migrants rescued in Med

ARAB GAZETTE - AFB..

The Italian coastguard claimed on December 28, 2016, that another 900 migrants have been rescued from stricken boats off Libya

Another 900 migrants have been rescued from stricken boats off Libya, Italy's coastguard said Wednesday, three days before the end of what is already a record year for arrivals at the country's southern ports.

Most of the latest batch of migrants were picked up overnight from two wooden boats travelling together and around 40 people were rescued from another boat at dawn.

Around 400 were rescued by the Aquarius, a rescue boat operated by charity SOS Mediterranee, which said the migrants it had taken on board included Eritreans, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Somalians and Syrians.

According to the Italian Interior Ministry, some 180,300 migrants had been registered this year at Italian ports prior to the latest rescues. This compares with a previous annual record of 170,100, recorded in 2014.

UN bodies say more than 5,000 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean, most of them on the Libya-Italy route. The Libyan Red Cross said Wednesday that 11 drowned bodies had been found on beaches near Tripoli in the West of the country.

Economists think London's property bubble will finally burst in 2017 ..

ARAB GAZETTE - LONDON : By Thomas Colson, Business Insider ..

After decades of runaway growth, 2017 could be the year the capital's property boom finally grinds to a halt.

That's according to a Times survey of leading economists released on Wednesday. Twenty-two from 39 economists surveyed predicted that London house prices would either flatline or drop in 2017.

At the more extreme end of the predictions, DeAnne Julius, a former member of the Bank of England's monetary policy committee, and Charles Dumas, chairman of Lombard Street Research, said prices could fall by as much as 10% next year.

Stephanie Flanders, chief market strategist at JP Morgan, predicted a 7% drop.
A growing consensus

The survey forms part of a growing consensus that one of the greatest asset run-ups in British history is over — a boom which saw average house prices in the capital grow from £257,000 in 2006 to £474,000 in 2016.

Mortgage lender Nationwide predicts that house prices in central London will increase by a nominal 2% next year, which equates to a real terms drop if inflation hits its predicted 2.7%

Meanwhile, the Royal Institute for Chartered Surveyors (RICS) forecasts a flatlining housing market in 2017, with foreign investment offsetting a decline in UK buyers.

Research from Knight Frank in December found that house prices in "prime" central London — those properties worth over £2 million — has already dropped by in some areas by as much as 13% over the past 12 months. The estate agent expects "broadly flat price growth in 2017 as declines start to bottom out."
So what's happening?

1. An inflated housing market

Halifax, Britain's biggest mortgage lender, warned that price falls are an inevitable consequence of an inflated housing market. "House prices in relation to average earnings are at an historical high in the capital; at nine times annual average earnings," said Halifax's housing economist Martin Ellis in an emailed statement.

"Additionally, mortgage affordability in London is worse than its long run average ... price growth will slow more sharply in London than elsewhere during 2017. There is a risk of some price falls in parts of London, particularly in the most expensive central locations, in 2017," he added.

Mortgage lending is set weaken in 2017 compared to 2016, and the difficulty of securing a house-buying loan in London will be particularly significant.

2. Brexit

Political uncertainty will be a dominant theme of 2017. Knight Frank said: "Political uncertainty is unlikely to subside in the early part of next year as the UK triggers the process to leave the European Union, Donald Trump potentially charts a new economic course in the US and ahead of elections in several European countries."

The UK's vote to leave the European Union in June is weighing particularly heavily on London's housing market. Market analysts Hometrack say that concerns over the financial impact of Brexit will "weigh on the housing market sentiment, particularly in southern England." The importance of the financial services sector to London's economy makes it particularly vulnerable.

Another Brexit-related problem is rising inflation, which the Bank of England predicts will increase by 2.7% next year as pessimism over Brexit keeps the pound cheap and drives up the price of imports. That means that even the nominal price rise of 2% in London property values which Hometrack predicts will be outstripped by inflation.

3. A fall in transaction volumes

A report from estate agents Portico earlier in December identified another warning trend. It found that transaction volumes in London — the number of houses being bought and sold — was "critically low," and in some areas 50% below than the previous year.

It shows that volume decline preceded price decline at the beginning of 2008, when a recession hit the UK. Volume recovery preceded price recovery the following year.

Portico said the London property market has "clearly" started reacting to the drop in volumes already, and forecasted a 6-7% decrease in prime central London prices next year. It also expected the price slump to "filter out" to greater London.

4. Buyers are looking elsewhere

Research from estate agents Hamptons found that Housebuyers in the capital are fleeing at the fastest rate for 10 years, with 77,500 Londoners buying houses outside the city in 2016 — 22% more than in 2015. That demonstrates an increased willingness to purchase property in London's "commuter belt," which may be contributing to a slowdown in demand in central London.

Hamptons head of research Johnny Morris believes, however, that next year's slowdown could actually attract buyers back to central London. He said: "It is likely 2016 will be a peak for London leavers. While, overall, the year saw growth in Londoners buying outside of the capital, in recent months the pace has been slowing. A slower housing market in 2017 will likely mean that we see less Londoners buying outside of the capital than in 2016."

In Birmingham and Manchester, where house prices are set to grow faster, supply is not keeping pace with sales. In London, buyers aren't snapping up houses at the same rate they're being sold, meaning a stall in prices is more or less inevitable.

In parting shot at Israel, Kerry warns Middle East peace in jeopardy

In parting shot at Israel, Kerry warns Middle East peace in jeopardy
 ..

ARAB GAZETTE -  By Lesley Wroughton and Yeganeh Torbati - WASHINGTON..

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday said Israel's building of settlements on occupied land was jeopardizing Middle East peace, voicing unusually frank frustration with America's longtime ally weeks before he is due to leave office.

In a swiftly issued statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Kerry of bias. He said Israel did not need to be lectured to by foreign leaders and looked forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to pursue more pro-Israeli policies.

In a 70-minute speech, Kerry said Israel "will never have true peace" with the Arab world if it does not reach an accord based on Israelis and Palestinians living in their own states.

Kerry's remarks, and Netanyahu's reply, marked the closing chapter of a bitter U.S.-Israeli relationship during President Barack Obama's administration over differences on settlement-building and the Iran nuclear deal signed last year.

Ties reached a low point last Friday when Washington cleared the way for a U.N. resolution that demanded an end to Israeli settlement building, prompting Israeli government officials to direct harsh attacks against Obama and Kerry.

"Despite our best efforts over the years, the two-state solution is now in serious jeopardy," Kerry said at the State Department. "We cannot, in good conscience, do nothing, and say nothing, when we see the hope of peace slipping away."

The United States had appealed to Israel in public and private to stop the march of settlements countless times, Kerry said.

"In the end, we could not in good conscience protect the most extreme elements of the settler movement as it tries to destroy the two-state solution," he said. "We could not in good conscience turn a blind eye to Palestinian actions that fan hatred and violence. It is not in U.S. interests to help anyone on either side create a unitary state."

His parting words were unlikely to change anything on the ground between Israel and the Palestinians or salvage the Obama administration's record of failed Middle East peace efforts.

Netanyahu said Kerry "obsessively dealt with settlements" and barely touched on "the root of the conflict - Palestinian opposition to a Jewish state in any boundaries".

In a statement, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he was convinced peace with Israel was achievable, but stood by his demand that Israel halt settlements before talks restart.

Netanyahu, for whom settlers are a key constituency, has said his government has been their greatest ally since Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in a 1967 war. Some 570,000 Israelis now live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, together home to more than 2.6 million Palestinians.

Israel expects to receive more favorable treatment from Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20. But Israelis fear Kerry's remarks will put them on the defensive, prompting other countries to apply pressure, including by adding fuel to the boycott, divestiture and sanctions movement against Israel, especially in Europe.

Trump denounced the Obama administration's treatment of Israel before Kerry's speech.

"We cannot continue to let Israel be treated with such total disdain and disrespect. They used to have a great friend in the U.S., but not anymore," Trump said in a series of tweets. "Stay strong Israel, January 20th is fast approaching!"

Trump has vowed to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which would upset many countries, and has appointed as ambassador a lawyer who raised money for a major Jewish settlement.

Kerry's speech provided some insights into an issue that he personally feels passionate about and had hoped to resolve during his nearly four years as secretary of state. Peace talks have been stalled since 2014.

The United States abstained rather than veto the Dec. 23 U.N. resolution, in what many saw as a parting shot by Obama.

Kerry vigorously defended the resolution. “It is not this resolution that is isolating Israel. It is the permanent policy of settlement construction that risks making peace impossible."

In a pointed reply to Netanyahu who said last week that "Friends don't take friends to the Security Council", and who has insisted the Obama administration had orchestrated the resolution, Kerry hit back, saying: "Friends need to tell each other the hard truths, and friendships require mutual respect."

Kerry defended Obama's commitment to Israel's security and U.S. support for Israel in international platforms. Earlier this year, the United States and Israel agreed $38 billion in military assistance over the next decade.

In Jerusalem on Wednesday, Israel approved construction of a multistory building for settlers in annexed East Jerusalem, an NGO said, after postponing authorization of hundreds of other homes.

Washington considers the settlement activity illegitimate and most countries view it as an obstacle to peace. Israel cites a biblical, historical and political connection to the land - which the Palestinians also claim - as well as security interests.
