Read to your children’, urges director of Emirates Airline Festival of Literature

ARAB GAZETTE - BY: Dana Moukhallati, DUBAI

A child is never too young for a story, and mums and dads should pick up a book and read to their children as soon as they are born.

Isobel Abulhoul, chief executive and trustee of the Emirates Literature Foundation and director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, said parents should read to their children as early as possible.

"I would advise parents to read to their children from the moment they’re born and continue long after they’ve learnt to read," said Ms Abulhoul at a reading event hosted by the Dubai Women Establishment at the Dubai Ladies Club.

"From when [my children] were born, they would lie or sit on my lap and we would share a book together. What message are you sending? You are saying that this is very important."

Ms Abulhoul, who came to the UAE in 1968, has spent most of her life promoting reading and writing with a focus on children.

"The gift of reading for [pleasure] is priceless and one that we should all try to give to the next generations," she said, adding that she spends just as much time reading children’s books as she does reading more grown up titles.

Ms Abulhoul said there are challenges that need to be addressed to encourage children to read, especially in Arabic.

"I see a challenge with many people not being educated in their mother tongue," she said. "I also think there should be more [production] of books in Arabic that are interesting and exciting."

Ms Abulhoul, who was awarded the Cultural Personality of the Year by Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, in 2010, credits her parents for her passion for books.

"It started with my parents, both were avid readers and books were always there," she said. "Books have always been warm, creative, and a place to escape to.

"I was so fortunate in my parents that their love for books was transferred to me and my brother. I can’t imagine a house without books in it.

"If you want to do well in any field, be it marketing, engineering, science, reading is going to help you. Statistics show that any child that reads for pleasure will usually outperform their peers and are more empathetic and tolerant."

The UAE leadership designated 2016 as the Year of Reading to create a generation of book lovers and to establish the country as a global hub for culture and knowledge.

In addition to recently honouring 45 Emirati individuals and entities that contributed to the UAE Year of Reading at the UAE Pioneers Award 2016 ceremony, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, issued a decree to establish the Mohammed bin Rashid library, the largest library in the Arab world, in Dubai.

Shamsa Saleh, chief executive of Dubai Women Establishment, lauded the UAE’s keenness to develop its people’s knowledge and culture.

"The vision of our wise leadership is to ensure sustainable development and a future full of prosperity, establishing the UAE among the most advanced nations in the world," she said.

Ms Saleh said that reading is key to the nation’s development and a source of inspiration for innovative and creative ideas.

As the Year of Reading comes to a close teachers, students, and officials have pledged to continue promoting reading in their communities and to instil a passion for the written word among their friends and colleagues.

Report : Every Year 700 Million People Fall Ill from Contaminated Food

ARAB GAZETTER - ROME, (IPS)

It may sound like an endless tale of modern seven plagues: mad cows, avian flu, led-poisoned fish, swine fever, desert locusts being the most dangerous of migratory pests, let alone new, aggressive rust threatening entire wheat crops in three continents, just to mention a few. Now it is about contaminated food that every year causes illness to 1 in 10 people around the world – or around 700 million – killing 420,000 people as a result.

The leading United Nations body in the field of food agriculture has something to say on this. And it does: food availability and food hygiene are compromised every day by diseases and pests that plague plants and animals as well as various types of contaminants.

“This happens on farms, in factories, at home, in fresh or sea water, in the open air and in the midst of dense forests,” warns the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Whether in the form of pathogen, insect or contaminant, threats are now travelling faster and further, making effective and timely responses more difficult and putting people’s food supplies, their health and livelihoods, and often their lives at greater risk, it adds.

Over 70 per cent of new diseases of humans have animal origin, with the potential of becoming major public health threats, FAO adds.

On this, another UN specialised agency, the World Health Organization (WHO), has something to add: the great majority of people will experience a foodborne disease at some point in their lives.

This highlights the importance of making sure the food we eat is not contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria, parasites, viruses, toxins and chemicals, according to WHO.

“Food can become contaminated at any point during production, distribution and preparation. Everyone along the production chain, from producer to consumer, has a role to play to ensure the food we eat does not cause diseases.”

Should this not be enough, the UN food and agriculture agency reminds that with more people, plants and animals travelling internationally, there are more pathogens moving with them.

“Pests plaguing plants and trees, diseases passing from animals to humans, pollutants compromising waters and soils, climate patterns undergoing drastic change, the threats to our food supply know no borders.”

Moreover, FAO says that a third of global crop production is lost annually due to insects and plant diseases that can spread to multiple countries and through continents.

Why All This Happens

According to the specialised agency, a number of trends are contributing to this, including certain types of intensive farming, deforestation, overgrazing and climate change.

In addition, conflicts, civil unrest and globalized trade are all increasing the likelihood of threats emerging, passing to other countries and becoming devastating in these newly infected countries, it adds.

“Food can be contaminated in the processing and marketing phases, processes that often take place in different countries making it more difficult to identify the point of contamination.”

To address the rising number of trans-boundary animal and plant pests and diseases, FAO has published “Averting risks to the food chain“, a set of proven emergency prevention methods and tools. They show how prevention, early warning, preparedness, good food chain crisis management and good practices can improve food security and safety, save lives and livelihoods.

“Keeping the food chain safe is becoming increasingly complicated in an interconnected and more complex world. That’s why we believe it’s important for sectors involved in food production, processing and marketing to watch out for current and potential threats and respond to them in a concerted manner,” said FAO Assistant Director-General Ren Wang

Trump seeks to cut foreign aid to 3 Central American nations

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - PALM BEACH, Fla.(AP)..

Taking drastic action over illegal immigration, President Donald Trump moved Saturday to cut direct aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, whose citizens are fleeing north and overwhelming U.S. resources at the southern border. The State Department notified Congress that it would look to suspend 2017 and 2018 payments to the trio of nations, which have been home to some of the migrant caravans that have marched through Mexico to the U.S. border. Amplified by conservative media, Trump has turned the caravans into the symbol of what he says are the dangers of illegal immigration — a central theme of his midterm campaigning last fall. With the special counsel’s Russia probe seemingly behind him, Trump has revived his warnings of the caravans’ presence. Trump also has returned to a previous threat he never carried out — closing the border with Mexico. He brought up that possibility on Friday and revisited it in tweets Saturday, blaming Democrats and Mexico for problems at the border and beyond despite warnings that a closed border could create economic havoc on both sides. “It would be so easy to fix our weak and very stupid Democrat inspired immigration laws,” Trump tweeted Saturday. “In less than one hour, and then a vote, the problem would be solved. But the Dems don’t care about the crime, they don’t want any victory for Trump and the Republicans, even if good for USA!′ As far as Mexico’s role, he tweeted: “Mexico must use its very strong immigration laws to stop the many thousands of people trying to get into the USA. Our detention areas are maxed out & we will take no more illegals. Next step is to close the Border! This will also help us with stopping the Drug flow from Mexico!” When reporters asked Trump on Friday what closing the border could entail, he said “it could mean all trade” with Mexico and added, “We will close it for a long time.” Trump has been promising for more than two years to build a long, impenetrable wall along the border to stop illegal immigration, though Congress has been reluctant to provide the money he needs. In the meantime, he has repeatedly threatened to close the border, but this time, with a new group of migrants heading north , he gave a definite timetable and suggested a visit to the border within the next two weeks. A substantial closure could have an especially heavy impact on cross-border communities from San Diego to South Texas, as well as supermarkets that sell Mexican produce, factories that rely on imported parts, and other businesses across the U.S. The U.S. and Mexico trade about $1.7 billion in goods daily, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which said closing the border would be “an unmitigated economic debacle” that would threaten 5 million American jobs.

Ukraine presidential vote begins under bribe claim cloud

ARAB GAZETTE - KIEV, Ukraine (AP)..

Voters in Ukraine are casting ballots in a presidential election Sunday after a campaign that produced a comedian with no political experience as the front-runner and allegations of voter bribery. Opinion polls have shown Volodymyr Zelenskiy who stars in a TV sitcom about a teacher who becomes president after a video of him denouncing corruption goes viral, leading a field of 39 candidates. The polls also had Zelenskiy outpacing incumbent President Petro Poroshenko and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, the other top candidates, by a broad margin. “Zelenskiy has shown us on the screen what a real president should be like,” voter Tatiana Zinchenko, 30, who cast her ballot for the comedian, said. “He showed what the state leader should aspire for — fight corruption by deeds, not words, help the poor, control the oligarchs.” If no candidate secures an absolute majority of Sunday’s vote, a runoff between the two top finishers would be held April 21. Concern about the election’s legitimacy spiked in recent days after the interior minister said his department was “showered” with hundreds of claims that supporters of Poroshenko and Tymoshenko offered money in exchange for votes. Campaign issues included endemic corruption in Ukraine, the struggling economy and a seemingly intractable conflict with Russia-backed separatists in the east of the country of 42 million people. Like the popular character he plays, Zelenskiy, 41, has made corruption a focus of his candidacy. He proposed a lifetime ban on holding public office for anyone convicted of graft. He also called for direct negotiations with Russia on ending the conflict in eastern Ukraine. His lack of political experience helped his popularity with voters amid broad disillusionment with the current generation of politicians. “There is no trust in old politicians. They were at the helm, and the situation in the country has only got worse — corruption runs amok and the war is continuing,” businessman Valery Ostrozhsky, 66, another Zelenskiy voter, said. Poroshenko, 53, who was a confectionary tycoon when he was elected five years ago, saw his approval with citizens sink amid Ukraine’s economic woes and a sharp plunge in living standards. He campaigned on promises to defeat the rebels in the east and to wrest back control of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014 in a move that Ukraine and almost all of the world views as illegal. During his presidency, he also vowed to take Ukraine into the European Union and NATO and pushed successfully for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to be recognized as self-standing rather than a branch of the Russian church. “Poroshenko has done a lot. He created our own church, bravely fought with Moscow and is trying to open the way to the EU and NATO,” schoolteacher Andriy Hristenko, 46, who voted to re-elect the president, said. ( The former prime minister, Tymoshenko, shaped her message around the economic distress of millions of Ukrainians, denouncing price hikes introduced by Poroshenko as “economic genocide” and promising to reduce prices for household gas by 50 percent within a month of taking office. “I don’t need a bright future in 50 years,” Olha Suhiy, a 58-year old cook. “I want hot water and heating to cost less tomorrow.” A military embezzlement scheme that allegedly involved top Poroshenko’s associates and a factory controlled by the president dogged Poroshenko ahead of the election. Ultra-right activists shadowed him throughout the campaign, demanding the jailing of the president’s associates accused of involvement in the scheme. Zelenskiy and Tymoshenko both used the alleged embezzlement to take hits at Poroshenko, who shot back at his rivals. He described them as puppets of a self-exiled billionaire businessman Igor Kolomoyskyi, which Zelenskiy and Tymoshenko denied. However, many political observers described the presidential election as a battle between Poroshenko and Kolomoyskyi, who was on Forbes Magazine’s list of billionaires with a net worth of $1.3 billion in 2014 before dropping off the following year. Both the president and Kolomoyskyi relied on an arsenal of media outlets under their control to exchange blows. Just days before the election, the TV channel Kolomoyskyi owns aired a new season of the “Servant of the People” TV series in which Zelenskiy stars as Ukraine’s leader. “Kolomoyskyi has succeeded in creating a wide front against Poroshenko,” said Vadim Karasyov, head of the Institute of Global Strategies, an independent Kiev-based think tank. “Ukraine has gone through two revolutions, but ended up with the same thing — the fight between the oligarchs for the power and resources.”

Gaza groups warn Israel against attacking protesters

ARAB GAZETTE - Gaza City, PALESTINE..

Two Palestinian resistance groups have warned Israel against attacking protesters during planned mass rallies in the Gaza Strip on Saturday. Thousands of Palestinians are set to stage mass protests in Gaza to mark the first anniversary of anti-occupation protests and the 43rd anniversary of the Land Day when six people were killed in 1976 during demonstrations against seizure of Arab land in Galilee. “Any Israeli assault on the marches will be met with an equal response,” the Islamic Jihad group said following a meeting between group chief Jihad al-Nakhla and Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Aarouri in Lebanese capital Beirut. During the meeting, the two groups agreed to “coordinate steps that should be taken in the face of any aggression against the marches”, the group’s website said. In the run-up to Saturday’s rallies, the Israeli army has deployed numerous tanks and armored vehicles along the buffer zone with the Gaza Strip. On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly instructed the army to prepare for the possibility of a “broad” campaign in Gaza. Nearly 270 Palestinian demonstrators have been martyred by Israeli army gunfire since Palestinians began holding regular demonstrations along the Gaza-Israel buffer zone in March of last year. Demonstrators demand the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes in historical Palestine from which they were driven in 1948 to make way for the new state of Israel. They also demand an end to Israel’s 12-year blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has gutted the coastal enclave’s economy and deprived its roughly two million inhabitants of many basic commodities.

Tom Hanks has written his first book, a collection of short stories

ARAB GAZETTE - New York

Actor and typewriter enthusiast Tom Hanks has been quietly working on a book of fiction outside of his film work, and it’s now set to be published by Knopf in October.

Uncommon Type: Some Stories will consist of 17 tales, the publisher announced on Tuesday, each involving a different typewriter (Hanks owns over a hundred of them).

The Academy Award-winner said in a statement:

“In the two years of working on the stories, I made movies in New York, Berlin, Budapest, and Atlanta, and wrote in all of them. I wrote in hotels during press tours. I wrote on vacation. I wrote on planes, at home, and in the office. When I could actually make a schedule, and keep to it, I wrote in the mornings from 9 to 1.”

Stories in Uncommon Type include: “An immigrant arriving in New York City after his family and life have been torn apart by his country’s civil war; a man who bowls a perfect game (and then another, and another), becoming ESPN’s newest celebrity; an eccentric billionaire and his faithful executive assistant on the hunt for something larger in America; and the junket life of an actor.”

Knopf editor-in-chief Sonny Mehta said he first came across Hanks’ fiction in a New Yorker short story several years ago and “was struck by both his remarkable voice and command as a writer. I had hoped there might be more stories in the works. Happily for readers, it turns out there were.”

ARAB GAZETTE - LANGKAWI, (Bernama)..

The Cabinet is of the opinion that the Langkawi Maritime and Aerospace 2019 (LIMA’19) Exhibition is a success, having drawn huge participation in all its events since it began last Tuesday. Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that it also managed to draw thousands of visitors, who had the opportunity to witness various shows during the exhibition. “In addition, there were business deals (signed) which can contribute to the economic growth of Malaysia,” he told a press conference after attending the Permodalan Kedah Bhd (PKB) silver jubilee celebration and launch of Adya Chenang Hotel here Saturday. He said this when asked to comment on the essence of the Cabinet meeting held at a hotel here Friday. Dr Mahathir said he hoped that Langkawi would continue to host the biennial event which and benefit the people of the island resort. “I believe the people of Langkawi will be good hosts to visitors during and after LIMA, that way they will earn huge profits when tourists come to Langkawi,” he said. The Prime Minister also said there were participants of the exhibition who expressed their desire to invest in Malaysia, particularly in Kedah and Langkawi. “Some countries admitted to wanting to import more palm oil, but we must also buy their products. Some said that even if Malaysia do not buy anything from them, they are still keen to invest in Kedah and Malaysia, especially Langkawi,” said Dr Mahathir, who is also Langkawi MP. A total of 406 companies, including 200 foreign firms, mostly involved in defence are taking part in LIMA’19, which is being held at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) here. Earlier in his speech, the Prime Minister urged state governments involved in business to do it in a proper manner and according to proper business management practices. He said that there were business entities set up by governments, including at the federal level, which failed or did not make a profit because of poor management. “The reason for that is not because the projects were not good, but because the management wasn’t. Good management is very important in all state or federal government businesses,” he said. Also present at the event was the prime minister’s wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali and Kedah chief minister Mukhriz Dr Mahathir. Owned by PKB, the 128-room Adya Chenang Hotel is developed with a concept of a Syariah-compliant hotel and has been operational since Nov 15 last year. (photoBERNAMA)

ARAB GAZETTE - Tehran, IRNA..

US is likely to extend exemption from sanctions for at least four major customers of Iran's oil as the previous waivers are getting expired in May, a London-based energy website reported. 'The US in early May will likely extend expiring sanctions waivers to at least four of Iran's top crude and condensate buyers,' according to a survey conducted by S&P Global Platts. 'One source familiar with the administration's current plans for next month said the US would allow China to maintain its current Iranian imports of about 500,000 b/d, require India to cut to 300,000 b/d from 350,000 b/d currently, and Turkey to about 75,000 b/d,' according to the website. 'Under the current plan, South Korea would be tasked with lowering its Iranian condensate purchases by another 10%, or about 18,000 b/d,' the website qouted the source. The waivers made Iranian crude and condensate exports increase to 1.3 million bpd in the first quarter of 2019 by 170,000 bpd compared to the figure of the fourth quarter in 2018, according to the website. Trump imposed sanctions on Iran after he announced unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal in May 2018. The other signatories—China, Russia, UK, France and Germany—expressed their support for the deal and announced commitment to trade with Iran despite US warnings. The report also predicted that Iran's oil imports by the customers would decrease ahead of May due to uncertainty over the waivers.

Kelagai - reviving ancient traditions

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - Baku, AZERTAC..

Kelagai is an Azerbaijani women's quadrangular headdress made from silk threads. In the western regions of the country, it is also called "chargat." Along with the symbols of beauty, dignity, loyalty and reverence, the kelagai kerchief also reflects the ancient history, culture and traditions of the Land of Fire. Note that the Azerbaijani kelagai is included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. All roads lead to Sheki Kelagai production is known in Azerbaijan since ancient times. High quality kelagai was produced in Tabriz, Ganja, Shamakhi, Sheki and Nakhchivan cities. Despite the fact that today kelagai is produced in many regions, this art is most common in the city of Basgal, 165 km north-west of Baku, and also in the city of Sheki, located 320 km away in the same direction. A key factor in the quality and prevalence of kelagai production in these regions is Sheki silk. Fabric production, which is then used to make kelagai, is a long process with a long history. In Azerbaijan, sericulture has been spread and developed for a long time. Studies show that the history of sericulture in Sheki has more than two millennia. Sheki for many years remained in the status of the silk-breeding center of Azerbaijan and the entire Caucasus. The largest silk factory in the world operated in the 19th century in Sheki. Sheki silk was known and highly valued not only in Azerbaijan, but also in the countries of the East, Europe and Russia. During the reign of Nicholas II, Sheki silk was added to the composition of the Russian Empire’s banknotes in denominations of five hundred rubles to prevent their collapse and rapid wear. At the international exhibition in London in 1862, Sheki silk was awarded a medal. The Saint-Etienne company from French Leon, was one of the regular customers of Sheki silk. It is not surprising that at the beginning of the XIX century, for success in the field of silk production, Sheki was called Caucasian Leon, comparing it with the French capital of silk. Also highly valued clothing, embroidery and head covers, made from Sheki silk. That is why the craftsmen engaged in the manufacture of kelagai preferred to buy Sheki silk, even if they themselves worked in Basgal. Thus, despite a certain remoteness of the two regions, they were firmly connected by “silk threads”. Travelers and diplomats who visited Azerbaijan in different years, for example, Adam Olearius, Anthony Jenkinson, Evliya Celebi, Alexandre Dumas, Fedot Kotov told about kelagai in their travel notes. It is also known that in 1870, kelagai from Basgal won the silver medal at the exhibition in London. Verge of craftsmanship Since the centuries-old history of kelagai production involves a complex process, representatives of a number of professions are involved in manufacturing - a tailor (creating kelagai), a dyer of kelagai fabric, a pattern artist (creating patterns using ready-made stencils) and an ornamentalist. Making this head blanket weighing 125 grams, easily passing through the ring, requires two days to paint and apply patterns, and, strange as it may sound, this women's head blanket is usually made by men, since only they can cope with the heavy work related to boiling dyes and heavy stencils. The dye is considered to be the most important in the production process of the female blanket, since painting the finished kelagai at high temperatures requires a lot of work, masterly skill and a delicate sense of taste. In the painting of kelagai in predominantly white, black, onion and green colors, dimensions 150x150 cm, and also 160x160 cm, natural dyes derived from barberries, paradise apples, saffron, currants and other plants are used. Silk fabrics are boiled to ensure that they do not fade in the future. Indeed, kelagai may wear out, but never lose their original color. After dyeing, the material is dried, smoothed and then begins its decoration. Kelagai patterns are applied using a wooden or metal stencil. Yelyan (edges) of kelagai, and sometimes Khoncha (center), are decorated with the basmanahysh method (pressure impregnation) with geometric or arbitrary patterns. The patterns applied to the kelagai carry a meaning and remain unchanged for centuries. The main patterned line is buta - as one of the most common elements of the ornamental art of Azerbaijan. The buta is a symbol, in the form of an almond-shaped pattern, with a pointed curved upper end. Something he recalls the imprint of the underside of the hand folded into a fist. It is assumed that this widespread ornament in Azerbaijan goes back deep in history. The kelagai of each region differs in ornaments applied to the edges of the scarf. In Kelagai from Sheki and Basgal, the patterns “Shah buta”, “Saya buta” and “Hirda buta” can be found most of all. Kelagai “Kheyrati”, “Sogany”, “Istiotu”, “Albuhary”, “Abi”, “Elyani” were also popular among the peoples of the Middle East and the Caucasus. Some forms and motifs in the kelagai patterns reflected, among other things, the life of the local population. So on confectionery and bakery products elements of kelagai patterns can be found. The veil, as a symbol of beauty and purity, is often mentioned in Azerbaijani folklore, poetry and decorative art. Of course, all these factors led to the fact that the kelagai ornaments found their place in the art of other nations of the world. Kelagai language One of the features of kelagai is that it creates both warmth and coolness. Silk cloth, being very thin and soft, takes care of the skin and protects it from various microbes. And today, kelagai in Azerbaijan remains a common element of women's wardrobe. Women of different ages wear kelagai of various colors and shapes. For example, older women wear it in the form of a turban or a small kerchief ("dinge"), while young women and girls tie kelagai like a scarf. Women wear black on mourning, and kelagai of bright colors on weddings. In general, older women wear kelagai of dark color and larger size, and young women wear bright colors and smaller size. Nowadays, kalagai can be worn, for example, as a shawl draped over shoulders, as a pareo, pancho, etc. At one time, kelagai in Azerbaijan was not only a symbol of female beauty. It was also considered an attribute of family relationships. The girl who gave the kelagai to the young man, thus, gave a vow of lifelong loyalty to the chosen one. Or, during the matchmaking ceremony, after obtaining the consent of the girl, the woman representing the groom's side presented a jewelry wrapped in red kelagai. In addition, during the henna ceremony of the wedding, the bride's head was covered with kelagai and then henna was applied to her hands and feet. Speaking about the role of kelagai at wedding ceremonies, it should be noted that the groom and his closest friends also tied kelagai on their necks, as well as tied to a side mirror of a wedding car. Moreover, on trays with gifts from women arriving at the wedding, kelagai was considered the most expensive gift. This tradition is still preserved in several regions of Azerbaijan. In some Azerbaijani families, the deceased is covered with black kelagai before the burial process. This indicates that kelagai is one of the elements accompanying Azerbaijanis throughout their lives. Also, the veil is a symbol of peace. So, if a woman throws kelagai between two fighting men, they immediately stop the fight. Kelagai remains relevant at all times. Despite the vagaries of fashion, the size and shape of the patterns of the bedspreads remain unchanged. Kelagai can be considered one of the most ancient headgear in the world. Showcase of traditions The great demand for kelagai in Azerbaijan and abroad ensures the life of this ancient art form. And today in the city of Sheki and the village of Basgal whole dynasties are happy to make kelagai. The craftsmen from Sheki and Basgal who at various times moved not only to other regions of Azerbaijan, but also to Georgia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Russia and Uzbekistan, created the basis for the production of kelagai in these countries. ARAB GAZETTE - MOSCOW (Sputnik)..

Russia's Sukhoi Su-57 (also known as the PAK FA product and T-50) fifth-generation fighter jet already has an export permit, and the Russian government is currently reviewing documents to officially rename the aircraft from T-50 internal designation to Su-57, a source in the aviation industry told Sputnik Friday. "The PAK FA already has an export passport. The government is currently reviewing documents related to renaming the jet from T-50 to Su-57", the source said. On Thursday, Janes media outlet reported, citing Viktor Kladov, Rostec's foreign cooperation director, that Rostec had submitted all the necessary documents to the Russian government to secure an export permit. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to give the final approval in a few weeks, the media added. According to state corporation Rostec's director for international cooperation, India has shown great interest in the newest Russian fighter jet. Separately, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu suggested last year that Turkey may buy Russian fighter jets if the United States fails to supply Ankara with F-35 fighters. The Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet, formerly known as Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation (PAK FA), is a single-seat, twin-engine multirole "stealth" aircraft designed for air superiority and attack roles. It is equipped with an advanced avionics system and airborne active phased array radar as well as with a variety of high-precision weaponry. The jet carried out its maiden flight in 2010 and is still being tested by the military. Last year, Russia briefly deployed two advanced Su-57 fighter jets in Syria on combat training missions.

Sabah Oil Palm Planters Have Not Ignored Forest Conservation -- Minister

ARAB GAZETTE - KINABATANGAN (Sabah),(Bernama)..

Oil palm planters in Sabah, the country’s second largest cultivator of the commodity, have not ignored their responsibilities in wildlife and forest conservation, says Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok Suh Sim. The minister said her visit to the state found that many people are unaware of the conservation efforts by oil palm planters here, including anti-palm campaigners from other countries. “This is good news (the conversation efforts), but many are unaware that our palm industry has taken many steps towards forest conservation. “This information will help my ministry fight for Malaysia’s palm industry, especially in revealing these efforts to the leaders of other countries, including those in Europe,” she told reporters after officiating the launch of the state’s Plant a Million Trees programme at the Pin Supu Forest Reserve here Saturday. Kok said she welcomed the commitment given by palm industry players in Sabah towards forest conservation, such as those of Sawit Kinabalu Sdn Bhd which manages the 2,500-hectare Sungai Pin Conservation Area, near here. She also praised all state leaders who had agreed to limit the growth of oil palm plantation areas in their respective states, including Sabah Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal, who announced on October 2018 that Sabah would not allow expansions into permanent forest reserves. “We are not limiting the palm industry, but there are ways for us to plant sustainably. Therefore, we need to diversify our planting,” she added. Touching on the Plant a Million Trees programme, Kok hoped Sabah can plant 100,000 trees from forest species annually for the next decade. Trump bars door to refugees, visitors from seven mainly Muslim nations

ARAB GAZETTE - WASHINGTON/CAIRO

Five Iraqi passengers and one Yemeni were barred from boarding an EgyptAir flight from Cairo to New York on Saturday after President Donald Trump halted the entry of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries, sources at Cairo airport said.

The passengers, arriving in transit to Cairo airport, were stopped and re-directed to flights headed for their home countries despite holding valid visas, the sources said.

Trump on Friday put a four-month hold on allowing refugees into the United States and temporarily barred travelers from Syria and six other Muslim-majority countries, saying the moves would help protect Americans from terrorist attacks.

He said his most sweeping use of his presidential powers since taking office a week ago, barring travelers from the seven nations for at least 90 days, would give his administration time to develop more stringent screening procedures for refugees, immigrants and visitors.

"I'm establishing new vetting measures to keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the United States of America. Don't want them here," Trump said earlier on Friday at the Pentagon.

"We only want to admit those into our country who will support our country and love deeply our people," he said.

The bans, though temporary, took effect immediately, causing havoc and confusion for would-be travelers with passports from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Besides Cairo it was not immediately clear whether other airports of countries listed by Trump had swiftly implemented the ban. Arab officials of the listed countries would not comment on the matter.

The order seeks to prioritize refugees fleeing religious persecution, a move Trump separately said was aimed at helping Christians in Syria. That led some legal experts to question whether the order was constitutional.

One group said it would announce a court challenge on Monday. The Council on American-Islamic Relations said the order targets Muslims because of their faith, contravening the U.S. Constitutional right to freedom of religion.

"President Trump has cloaked what is a discriminatory ban against nationals of Muslim countries under the banner of national security," said Greg Chen of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Trump has long pledged to take this kind of action, making it a prominent feature of his campaign for the Nov. 8 election. But people who work with Muslim immigrants and refugees were scrambling to determine the scope of the order.

Even legal permanent residents - people with "green cards" allowing them to live and work in the United States - were being advised to consult immigration lawyers before traveling outside the country, or trying to return, according to Muslim Advocates, a civil rights group in Washington.

On Friday evening, Abed Ayoub of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee said he had fielded about 100 queries from people anxious about the order, which he said he believed could affect traveling green card holders, students, people coming to the United States for medical care and others.

Wife of Venezuelan Opposition Leader to Maduro: 'Enough Already'

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | Sunday, 24 March 2019 | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - LIMA, PERU, Reuters..

The wife of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido had a brief message for President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday, following the arrest of her husband’s chief of staff this week: “Enough already.” In an interview with Reuters in Peru, where she met with Venezuelan immigrants before a trip to the United States, Fabiana Rosales said the arrest of Roberto Marrero on terrorism accusations on Thursday was a “farcical” attempt by Maduro to break the opposition’s morale. “We know what we’re up against. We know what kind of monster this dictatorship is,” said Rosales, a 26-year-old journalist and opposition activist who is considered Venezuela’s first lady by supporters. Venezuela plunged into a deep political crisis in January, when Guaido invoked the constitution to assume an interim presidency, arguing Maduro’s 2018 re-election was illegitimate. He has been recognized by most Latin American and Western countries as Venezuela’s rightful leader. But Maduro retains control of state functions and the loyalty of the military top brass. A socialist, Maduro says Guaido is a puppet of the United States and is attempting to lead a coup against him to wrest control of the OPEC nation’s oil reserves. Asked if she had a message for Maduro, Rosales said, “Enough already.” Rosales said spies and pro-government armed groups known as “collectives” have long followed her and her husband, monitoring their movements and stalking their family members and friends. “I and my family members have received threats of being thrown in jail or killed,” she said. “But there’s something they’ve underestimated, and that’s that our ideals in this struggle won’t be broken,” she said. “If they thought they can break our morale by arresting Roberto Marrero, or that they could break him, they’re very mistaken.” Venezuela’s foreign ministry did not answer phone calls seeking comment outside regular working hours on Saturday. Venezuelan authorities have accused Marrero of planning attacks against political figures, and said an arms cache had been seized from his house. Guaido, 35, told Reuters in an interview on Friday that he was prepared for more people in his team to be arrested, but thought Maduro’s government had reached its final stage. Rosales said she thought Maduro was too fearful to have Guaido himself arrested. “I think the regime is thinking about it very carefully. I don’t think they would dare,” she said. “They’ve always been afraid of people who believe in freedom.” Rosales declined to comment on whom she planned to meet in the United States, but said she had confirmed visits to New York City and Miami. “We’ll see what happens in coming days. But I’m certain the freedom for Venezuela is getting closer and closer,” she said.

US Airlines Visit Boeing as FAA Awaits 737 Max Upgrades

Posted by مؤسسة الوطن العربى الإعلامية - لندن ، المملكة المتحدة . WA MEDIA FOUNDATION - LONDON, UK | | Posted in

ARAB GAZETTE - CHICAGO / WASHINGTON, Reuters..

Teams from the three U.S. airlines that own 737 Max jets headed to Boeing Co.’s factory in Renton, Wash., to review a software upgrade on Saturday, as U.S. regulators prepared to receive and review the fixes in coming weeks. The factory visits indicated Boeing may be near completing a software patch for its newest 737 following a Lion Air crash that killed 189 people in Indonesia last October. This month, a second deadly crash involving an Ethiopian Airlines Max in Addis Ababa triggered the fleet’s worldwide grounding. Timing for when passenger flights will resume remained uncertain. Boeing has come under global scrutiny along with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the agency that must approve the software fix and new training. Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines Co., the world’s largest operator of the Max, began parking its fleet at a facility in Victorville, Calif., at the southwestern edge of the Mojave Desert, to wait out the global grounding. Southwest has 34 of the jets, United Airlines has 14 and American Airlines has 24. Acting Administrator Dan Elwell told lawmakers last week that the FAA expected Boeing would complete its upgrade as early as March 25, kicking off the approval process. An FAA spokesman said Saturday that the agency expects to receive the software fix early next week. A U.S. official briefed on the matter Saturday said the FAA had not yet signed off on the upgrade and training but the goal was to review them in coming weeks and approve them by April. It remained unclear whether the software upgrade, called “design changes” by the FAA, would resolve concerns stemming from the ongoing investigation into the March 10 Ethiopian Airlines crash, which killed all 157 on board. The U.S. official said planned changes included 15 minutes of training to help pilots deactivate the anti-stall system known as MCAS in the event of faulty sensor data or other issues. It also included some self-guided instruction, the official added. The Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents American Airlines pilots, said it has been in talks with Boeing, the FAA and airlines to get the airplanes flying again as soon as possible with an acceptable level of safety. “Right now we’re in wait-and-see mode to see what Boeing comes up with,” said Capt. Jason Goldberg, spokesman for the APA, part of a delegation of airline safety experts and pilots set to test the upgrade. “We’re hopeful, but at the same time the process can’t be rushed.” Boeing said on Saturday that it was continuing to schedule meetings with all 737 Max operators. Southwest and United said they would also review documentation and training associated with Boeing’s updates on Saturday.
